No time

Play technicals for lighting (our new volunteer job) today so have to get these trees in the ground. Was here early so had everything ready to go in the ground before making tea for the house. It’s an amazing thing working here in the sunshine planting trees. The sun always seems to come out even if it’s just for a little moment and in the light everything changes. Got the trees caged up for protection and then watered the greenhouse.

Talking over where to place the other trees with Jane so that they have maximum impact. Hoping Granny will want to get out to see them, she seems excited about the prospect of cherry blossoms on the property.

An evening of clearing bits from around the path, checking the paths for drainage and trying to fix the sit on mower, sometimes it just seems like groundhog day. Sharped axes and chopped wood, before you know it the darkness of another night has arrived.

Collected £61.03 on the walk for February this year which is 3 times what was collected last year!

Weather- the most snow we have had all winter, was melted by noon, crisp clear blue day.

Rolling

This morning I made my new measuring device so we can now plan the new path network. The paths are very wet under foot as it has snowed over night and drainage seems to be a big part of the problem. The grass paths just seem to get worse as they  need time to recover but it feels like the season has kicked off already with 4 small groups before 11 am this morning.

Work on the cold frames and the greenhouse is really getting going fingers crossed this is the last of the bad weather but some how I don’t think so. Checking the new line of cherry trees in the front lawn is high on the agenda and also all the tree cages. Really missing the quad at the monument as we’re still waiting for parts and the sit on lawnmower is also not running. Piles of cleared honeysuckle and branches are needing to be taken to the burn pile but will have to wait for the quad.

Jane and I planned out where to put the cherry trees on the drive so I have dug holes for planting tomorrow. We began to clear the brambles from the fence line near Ian’s house and also dug holes for the sliver-birch in the same area. The path along the lower medow is getting really boggy again and needs more attention.

Flying by

With a brief stop in the rain this morning I fly down to the rock pools at the start of Ian’s walk to see how they have settled. Decided to add a bit more rock to cover the black liner. Clearing honeysuckle from trees near by.

Then I’m off to find out more about the plays and visit one of the local schools. Back in the afternoon having left Jane a list of wee jobs. Back to finishing off the lid to the new cold frame, Jane painting as I fix the reinforcement wire mesh to help stop the wind and rain damaging the top.

Tray By Day

I’ve finally realised If I’m ever going to get everything done I need to only seed one tray a day other wise I’m going to spend all my time in the greenhouse sowing seeds. I also need to come up with a way to sort and store my seeds as I spend too much time looking though the box of seeds for what I need.

Temperature in the greenhouse is also becoming an issue as due to the weather  we were having it was keeping the greenhouse in the high 20’s during the day but  we have snow on the mountain tops again and a chill is in the air. The seeds need more heat so I have now set up a pairing heater which needs to be running during the day as the the tmp is now running about 12 degrees which is no good. Time to finish the cold frames.

Built the first of the raised beds for the potatoes which need a lick of paint and more self taping bolts before we can fill with compost. They are going to help reduce the wind in the garden as they stand 14 inches high. Just need to make more and cut more tin. Spent some time down at the start of the walk working out how to sort the crossing of the meadow as there is still standing water there, need to clear his ASAP.

Planting and getting wet

Planted out some new heathers today, one across from granny’s window and the others around the walk, fingers crossed these will grow and start to spread out. Seeded Jimmy’s walk with some wild flower and other parts of the walk too.

The new ponds at the start of Ian’s walk, when coming across the lower meadow, need to be fixed so they hold water better. They are going to look good during summer when the plant life grows up around them. So I black lined the higher pond first and made the dam wide so someone can walk across it, just need to clear the area now.

Then dug out the section going under the path as the water keeps going where it wants to rather that into the pipe. Began building up a bed just next to the path,  then lined the lower pond which seems to be holding the water better. It will need some more love when the rain isn’t so heavy. Then dug a small guided stream for the water to follow uncovering a field drain at the same time. The water now has direction and leads off the property instead of flooding the lower level. Defo need more rocks to make all this work.

Waiting for quad parts still and this is getting costly as things are being to grow and the piles of cutting that are too big to remove are now getting in the way of progress.

Seeds

Wow its been a long time since I’ve spent the whole day but other and a couple of short walks around the property and a quick tinker with the van sowing seeds. I just made up tray after tray of seeds writing labels and noting details about what will go where and how long things may take. If this weather keeps up then there will be no stopping this being a very colourful year on Rudha Mor.
